Dayton Air Show Drive-In Set Up

THUNDER OVER MICHIGAN & CENTERPOINT ENERGY DAYTON AIR SHOW TRANSITIONING TO DRIVE-IN STYLE FORMAT

Two of the nation’s most well known air shows are transitioning to a drive-in style format for 2021.

The CenterPoint Energy Dayton Air Show presented by Kroger has made the announcement public and is having an event dubbed “Drive-In and Take Off”. The Air Show, which will be held July 10th & 11th at Dayton International Airport in Dayton, Ohio, is offering Drive-In Tickets for just $99 (plus a fee) or a Platinum Drive-In ticket (which includes premium parking near the flight line) for $199 (plus a fee). See photo below from the air show to see how it will all be laid out.

Up to six people are allowed per car and will have a 20×20 personal viewing area surrounding their vehicles. While most air shows do no allow coolers anymore, due to the drive-in nature, coolers will be allowed in 2021. Tickets must be purchased online, printed out, and put on the dash for quicker entry onto the grounds. Tickets will not be available for purchase at Kroger like they are traditionally.

The 2021 CenterPoint Energy Dayton Air Show (formerly Vectren Dayton Air Show prior to CenterPoint Energy merging with Vectren) will feature the United States Air Force Thunderbirds, United States Army Golden Knights, AeroShell Aerobatic Team, SHOCKWAVE Jet Truck, Michael Wiskus & LUCAS OIL Airshows, Jacquie B Airshows and many more still to be announced. Rob Reider & Danny Clisham will return to announce.

Meanwhile, Yankee Air Museum‘s big warbird air show, Thunder Over Michigan, will also be transitioning to a drive-in only style after quietly pulling ticket sales one month ago. This one hasn’t been fully announced yet, but members did recently receive a letter regarding it. Prices will range from $165 to $185 per car depending on the session. The air show will still feature the World’s Largest Gathering of B-25 Mitchells, in an event called “Mitchell Madness”. In addition to the B-25s, the air show will also feature the US Air Force F-35 Lightning II Demo Team and the United States Air Force Thunderbirds have also tentatively joined the lineup (official announcement forthcoming). Information on the drive-in style will be available within the next few weeks.

The B-25D Mitchell, previously known as “Yankee Warrior”, recently got a nice repaint to become “Rosie’s Reply” just in time for the “Mitchell Madness” gathering. Check out the video below:

Several air shows in 2020 were able to successfully have drive-in style air shows, most notably Wings over North Georgia (Rome, Georgia), New York Air Show (Montgomery, New York), Central Florida Space & Air Show (Sanford, Florida) and SkyDrive London (London, Ontario). With many questions still looming about this summer as we move into a post-pandemic world, many show organizers are looking at the drive-in style format and seeing if they should apply it to their show. What was a wacky idea prior to the COVID-19 pandemic may end up becoming something that becomes more common following the pandemic. While many shows are making the decision to switch based on local health guidelines, many may decide to continue to plan such events in the future as long as they remain successful. This is something that we will discuss in an upcoming post.
